A Glimpse Into
English Language Arts
Words Their Way (WTW) is a regular homework assignment happening on a weekly basis. You child's spelling words are an appropriate level based in your child's needs and scores on a spelling inventory. Words are introduced on Mondays. Spelling tests are taken on SpellingCity.com, so please feel free to utilize this website to practice spelling throughout the week. Spelling homework is due on Fridays (Thursdays if no school Friday of that week)
R.A.C.E. - This is a strategy for short answer/extended response. Students use each letter in R.A.C.E. to respond to comprehension questions. R=restate the question, A=answer, C=Cite evidence from the text, E=edit. We will continue to practice this throughout the year. This is a difficult skill for many elementary level students to grasp and internalize; therefore, repeated practice is necessary. You may also hear your child refer to this as "Flip It".
Guided Reading Groups - Students will participate in guided reading on a weekly basis. If you would like access to leveled readers at home you may download/visit the free Raz-Kids app/website (ask your child for his/her login information when available). Students are welcome to use this at home as added practice. There are many leveled readers available and once they have completed the digital tasks, they may choose to read another book at an appropriate level from the digital Raz-Kid's book room. Raz-Kids may be counted towards reading 20 minutes as homework; however, these minutes should not be representative of all minutes. Please ask your child to enjoy reading his/her AR (Accellerated Reader) books on an appropriate level. Click the photo below to be directed to the Raz-Kids homepage.

Math Practice at School and at Home
Ask your child to log into his/her Prodigy account at home. It is a self-paced math program designed to help with the Common Core State Standards and grade level standardized tests (AIR test). Set up in a virtual word, your child must answer math questions to cast spells on enemies. A highly motivating program!
About Me
Welcome to my classroom! I’m glad to have your child in my class(es). Let me tell you my story. I went to Northmont when I was a kid. I graduated from Northmont in 2000 and Wright State in 2006. This is my 14th year teaching. I’ve spent all fourteen years right here at Northmont teaching 3rd grade. I LOVE it! I moved to Englewood Elementary since the closing of OR Edgington in 2014. In 2013 I graduated from Walden University with a Master’s degree in Reading and Literacy. Just like the students I teach, I worked hard for my grades.
I am married to Mr. Burkhardt. He teaches chemistry at the high school. In February 2014 we welcomed our son, Parker into the world. He had an exciting start to life. He was born premature and weighed only 3 lbs 13 oz at birth. We spent 20 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Kettering Hospital. His premature birth has not impacted his growth in any way. We truly feel blessed! In January of 2018 we welcomed our daughter, Ellie. She was also considered premature by one day! She was born three weeks and one day early. She is also doing great!
Let me share some of my interests with you. I love to create things. Sewing is at the top of my hobby list! I’m also a fanatic about and enjoy organizing, so please encourage your child in helping to keep our classroom clutter free and tidy. I love to spend time with my family and look forward to Friday night pizza night! My favorite candies are chocolate and peanut butter or sea salted caramel. I love to eat Italian food! I enjoy shopping and wearing trendy clothes. My favorite store is the GAP. I’m also not afraid to get my hands dirty or try new things. I do spend time planning instruction at home on an as needed basis, but as you can see, with so many other interests I try to keep work and home separate so I can focus home time on family and the activities I enjoy outside of school.
As your child's teacher, I hope to build a trustworthy relationship with you and your child and offer an excellent year in 3rd grade. I hope to empower independent thinking, inquisitive minds, and a sense of ownership in learning. We are all a team! Let’s have some fun this school year!
Love,
Mrs. Burkhardt

My 2019 Summer Accident
On July 2, 2019 my family and I entered Fifth Third Field to attend a Dayton Dragon's baseball game. It was just after 7:00pm and the game was just getting started. Having just walked in the back entrance of the field, we were anxious to get to our seats. The sights and smells of the food had us excited to spend the evening enjoying the all American sport. As we made our way along the path behind first base, I heard the crowd get rowdy over a fly foul ball. As I turned to look toward the field, I was struck in my face by the ball. There was no warning and the significance of the hit was quickly realized. As the shock calmed and medics quickly arrived it was more than obvious I had suffered a severely broken nose. I had attracted quite a lot of attention and shortly after an ambulance arrived to rush me to the hospital. I was taken to Kettering Hospital where I spend two nights and received surgery to repair the break. I spent the next several weeks recovering and checking in with my plastic surgeon. I am currently doing well, with no visible signs of the injury; however, next summer I will undergo a secondary surgery to repair the nasal septum. It will be awhile before I am comfortable attending another baseball game. Always keep your eye on the ball!
